Mar 04, 2012  tell me about your universal m1 carbine. Kext wizard. This is a discussion on tell me about your universal m1 carbine within the Steel and Wood forums, part of the Rifle Forum category; I want a m1 carbine. Funds are limited! Want a plinker, not a collector. I'm seeing a bunch of universal.

What really matters is when it was produced.I have an early model and almost every part is USGI.Here is a link that gives the history of the company's that made civilian market carbines and an idea of the most desirable rifle they offered.I have put 1,000's pf rounds down mine without a single problem.I also have two USGI rifles that actually are heavier and have some feed issues I have never had with my Universal. As far as price it depends on who made it, when and if it was at least a 90% pattern after a USGI M1 30 carbine. If you really want a 30 carbine I have to agree with others above find a USGI mainly because finding good aftermarket 30 carbines is hard. Most were less than 50% USGI pattern made and used proprietary parts that are not available any more.I got very lucky on mine.Early production when they had access to lots of USGI parts. The only parts on mine that are not USGI stamped was the milled receiver and the stock. All other parts have USGI stampings and proof marked.Last edited by Madmo; at 03:36 PM. Wouldn't own a Universal for any reason, especially with screwed up parts. I believe the Universal had a different system than the GI Carbines. It had some piston system that when it goes, you have a bolt action rifle and nobody fixes them. Stick with a GI gun.

Lots of parts available if needed. You buy a cheap, busted gun and that's what you got and nobody else wants it. You buy a GI Carbine, and they fly off the rack when you want to sell it. I have thinned my Carbine collection, and when I have them for sale at the show, they are the most handled, fondled gun and rarely go home with me. Just MHO, BB.

It stove pipes commercial ammo but runs just fine on military ammo.it's a later one with very few GI parts. ( i really dislike the pot metal trigger house). But it's a beater and fun to shoot. Long as i can find good mil surp ammo to feed it. One of these days i'm gona figure out a formula for reloading, that will run in that gun.numrich arms bought all the spare parts for them when universal went out of buis. They have pretty much any universal carbine part you might need.yes they are on the low end of the scale. But as gi carbines get more stupid in price, the more the price on universal carbines goes up.i've seen them Sold on GB for 400 and 500 dollars.

Are they worth it?? Probably not. But if you want to shoot a M1 that you can beat like a red headed step child.

And not worry about ruining your 1,000 dollar and up GI carbine. Then get it.how much is your buddy looking to get for it?? 250/300 would be the most i'd go. Pretty much any gun these days that goes bang. Is worth 200.and buying it from your buddy. No paper trail. Hell the no paper trail is worth a extra 100 all by it's self.

The vast majority of Universal carbines do not use any USGI parts and they are not interchangeable. The supply of replacement parts for Universal carbines is now gone. There are none. Astro saber cps download. If the bolt has broken and that is unusual as most often it's the slide that breaks, then what is next to break?

If the carbine is in the first 25,000 serial number range it will use USGI parts but after that it's a long down hill slide for the universal carbines in quality. Those made at the end of their production are outright junk and some are dangerous. Save your money and buy an original.
